ADHERENCE TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN A GROUP OF OBESE ELDERLY PEOPLE
 
The aim of the study was to examine the adherence to healthy lifestyle among obese elderly in Konya, Turkey. Fort his reason, the prevalence of obesity, factors related to obesity, the associations between body weight and adherence was examined together with depressive symptoms and lifestyle-related habits on adherence to determine the adherence related factors in a group of elderly people. Sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, education, family status, accommodation was assessed. Lifestyle relation questionnaires such as food frequency questionnaire, nutrition-related behaviors, smoking habits, Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA); Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), short version; Adherence to Healthy Lifestyle Questionnaire (AHLQ) were used. The data collected with regards to the hypothesis tested in this study was analyzed on SPSS using descriptive statistics, chi square test, Cronbach’s alpha and linear regression. Our study found that, Prevalence of obesity was higher in female participants comparing to male participants. Most prevalent chronic health conditions were back and neck problems, diabetes, heart and circulatory problems, arthritis, asthma and shortness of breath. Awareness among self-assessed body weight was insufficient. Increase in body mass index showed decrease in received support and adherence level. Prevalence of depression among participants was high. Increase in depression level resulted in decrease in physical activity and increase in unhealthy food consumption and perceived constraints of physical activity. Higher level of physical activity, meat and cereal consumption showed better adherence to healthy lifestyles, whereas higher unhealthy food consumption demonstrated lower adherence. Body mass index demonstrated adverse association with adherence to healthy lifestyles, while meat and cereals consumption, social support score, results’ score and satisfaction score were five main factors related to higher level of adherence to healthy lifestyle.
