Aim:In this study, we aimed to investigate the post-operative intensive care processes and results of patients with bariatric surgery using different techniques.
Introduction:Obesity is increasing everywhere.(1,2) ).Anesthesia management of obese patients in the preoperative and postop period is important.Within the scope of bariatric surgery;Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass Intensive care hospitalizations may occur due to complications(bleeding, leakage, etc.)associated with these surgeries and postoperative conditions (hypoxia, hypoventilation, etc.)due to obesity (3,4).
Materials and Methods:We analyzed the data of patients in need of intensive care who underwent bariatric surgery between January 1, 2013, and November 30, 2020, with the permission of the scientific studies committee of our hospital and who were hospitalized in the ICU for more than 24 hours.Demographic data were recorded as BMI, ASA, APACHE-II, SAPS II, SOFA, NRS2002 scores, comorbidities, invasive mechanical ventilation (IVM) times, and exit pattern.
Results:Between January 1, 2013,and November 30, 2020, 45 patients were examined. 45 patients out of 1033 patients were hospitalized in intensive care;5 patients who were taken from the service had a sleeve gastrectomy operation,went to the service after the operation, and for various reasons (leakage, bleeding, etc.)One patient died and the others were discharged to the service.There was no difference when evaluated according to BMI, IVM duration, APACHE2, SAPS 2, SOFA, and NRS 2002 parameters of patients with Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass(Table 1)
Conclusion:ICU admissions may occur in bariatric surgery operations,both due to obesity and postoperative complications.Although serious complications are rare in obese patients with bariatric surgery,they can be mortal.
